Last Updated: December 10, 2003

Name of Organization/Institution: Cancer Information Service of New England

Keywords: Hospitals, Municipalities

Description of best practice: CIS provides cancer information to the general public or specific cancer sites. This includes a toll free hotline (1-800-4-CANCER) where staff explain information in easy to understand terms. CIS serves all mainly English, Spanish and some Asian languages. They have partners throughout New England and sponsors trainings on topics such as: capacity building; community health profiles; and cancer clinical trials.

CIS works well because community members trust their own in terms of receiving health education. From July 2002, the first group returned 231 new patients for primary care.
