Name of Organization/Institution: JSI Research and Training Institute, Inc

Keywords: environmental health, training, Latino

Description of best practice: Casa de Salud hires and trains Latino residents of Lawrence, MA to serve as environmental health educators. Casa Leaders conduct neighborhood meetings in Spanish engaging residents in programs to address environment factors that adversely affect health. We serve Spanish speaking population of Lawrence.

Environmental health issues are addressed at the neighborhood level where neighborhood culture is dominant. Affected residents develop their own leadership based on their own understanding and experience and learn to advocate for environmental health improvements that they have identified as priorities.

The first step of this program was to hire a Latino resident with natural leadership skills who recruits community residents to work with the program. Residents were supported and trained to conduct community outreach, plan, manage, and conduct meetings, and train residents on environmental health issues.

The program is funded by the EPA Office of Rsearch and Development, the EPA Office of Air Toxics, and the Environmental Justice Office of the MA Executive Office of Environmental Affairs.
