Description of best practice: This program targets employees who are underemployed, which includes but is not limited to foreign-born nurses presently working in assistant roles until they can pass US licensure exams. This program also includes those who are presently applying to nursing school for the first time and have ESL. There is also a culturally competent care curriculum for employees. This 8 hour program is a paid educational day to encourage staff to attend.

The program offers access to financial assistance, mentoring and help with navigating complex systems (school bureaucracy, scholarship applications). Three out of seven participants who were enrolled are now practicing registered nurses. The staff satisfaction survey, which asks questions about cultural competence, indicates over 90% positive feedback on the training. The course is offered once a month.

This program was launched when an internal diversity committee looked into disparities from a non-medical perspective. They asked patient care services to launch an inquiry into health disparities by asking different minority associations to come and talk about their experiences in the field.

This program is funded by the Massachusetts General Hospital Diversity Program.
